Local character chat choices

Murmur Sphere vs SillyTavern

Murmur Sphere is a free, private character-chat app built to make local AI easier to use. Create a character with your local model, load an LLM in the app, and even train a LoRA when you are ready. Bring in supported character card files, or selected PolyBuzz chats for training.

At a glance

What you can do in each app

Both cover the basics. Murmur Sphere also puts local character generation, model loading, and LoRA training into the app itself.

Shared character-chat features first, followed by built-in Murmur Sphere workflows

Integrated local LLM loaderYes: Find, prepare, load, and check readiness in the appNo: Default setup loads models in a separate backend
Built-in LoRA trainerYes: Guided local QLoRA training with compatible base and hardwareNo: No text-model LoRA trainer in the documented default setup
PolyBuzz chats for trainingYes: Import selected conversations into the local training reviewNo: No built-in PolyBuzz chat import for LoRA training

The first three rows are shared features. An X means the workflow is not built into SillyTavern's documented default setup; extensions or separate tools may offer it. PolyBuzz import here means selected chats for training, not PolyBuzz characters or an entire account. Both apps need a model. Murmur Sphere also needs Ollama installed separately; local LoRA training requires a compatible original model and suitable hardware.

Getting started

What each setup asks of you

Local chat still needs an AI model running on your computer.

Murmur Sphere

Choose, load, chat

Install Murmur Sphere and Ollama separately, then get a compatible model. The app helps you choose and load it and shows Ready when you can chat. Pick an included character, import a supported card file, or generate one with your local model. Later, you can train a LoRA using reviewed source chats, including selected PolyBuzz conversations.

SillyTavern

Connect a backend, then chat

Install and run SillyTavern, set up a local model backend, and connect to it in the app. The backend manages the model. You can create characters or import cards.

Privacy depends on the setup

Where do your messages go?

With Murmur Sphere

Character prompts and replies go to the model running through Ollama on your computer. The app does not silently switch to a hosted AI. Current saved profiles are local plaintext with integrity checks, not encrypted at rest. Downloads, a small startup release check, optional public images, and other actions you choose can use the internet. Read the full privacy boundary.

With SillyTavern

You choose the backend. If you connect a local model, generation can happen on your machine. If you connect a hosted AI provider, the prompt goes to that provider. Extensions and other configured services can add their own connections, so check the setup you use.

The choice

Local character chat with fewer setup decisions

Murmur Sphere keeps the normal path short: choose a compatible model, Load, choose or make a character, and chat. Its Model Library handles preparation and shows when the model is ready. If you want to go further, the app has a guided LoRA training workflow. It is free, needs no account, and keeps your character chats on your computer.

Ollama and the model are separate installs. Training also requires a compatible original model and suitable hardware. Murmur Sphere is independent of SillyTavern; its settings and chat history do not transfer directly.

Before you install

A few things to know about Murmur Sphere

The Windows app is free and needs no account. Ollama and a compatible model are separate. The current installer is not code-signed, so Windows may show an “Unknown publisher” warning. Its source is private. Check the Download page for the current Windows requirement and official file details.
